| Background to the Society | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The objectives of the Society are very simple:
Our three main events of the year: We offer everyone a good time at a reasonable price - and in addition, for at least two of those events we bring a band out from Scotland to play. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Logistics of the Society | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Society is guided by a Committee, elected each year at the Annual
General Meeting. The Committee members make all decisions regarding events,
charitable giving, etc, and also end up doing the majority of the work as is
normal in every society. Ordinary members can be re-elected as long as they
feel enthusiastic and others nominate them, but the Chieftain can only hold
post for two consecutive years. Jamie Irvine-Fortescue has held the position
as Chieftain since 1st April 2005. Membership is open to anyone with an interest of any kind in Scotland: full membership is for those who are themselves Scottish or whose parent(s) / grandparent(s) are; associate membership is for those who have an interest but no Scottish blood in their veins! The present membership rates are (Rial Omani) RO 5 per annum for family membership (unlike the other groups, we give membership to the whole family, not just the cardholder) and (Rial Omani) RO 3 per annum for single people or single parent families. We have only two honorary members of the Society: the British Ambassador and
spouse. We are delighted that the present Ambassador and Mrs Guckian have
been able to join us at our recent events and sincerely hope that our
timetable and theirs continues to make it possible for them to be our Guests
of Honour at such events. |

| Benefits | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A practical benefit to our members is that they can buy cheaper tickets for
the various events. Another benefit is that we provide a discount list for
members. Societies like the AWG and the Women's Guild also do this but their membership is exclusively for women. With the Caledonian Society, all members of the family are members of the Society and can therefore use the membership cards. |

|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Jamie is from Aberdeenshire and has served as Honorary President of
The Caledonian Society of Norway from 1998 - 2002. His wife Wendy is
also from Aberdeenshire and they have 3 children; Camilla aged 11,
Sophia aged 8 and Alexander aged 6 all of whom were born in Norway
where they lived for 13 years. Wendy is serving on the committee as
Publicity Officer. Jamie has spent 21 years in the Oil and Gas industry both in the North Sea and Middle East and is currently working with Petroleum Development Oman. His current hobbies are scuba diving, sailing, swimming, fishing, golf, downhill/cross country skiing, desert camping and travel. He has now held the post of Chieftain for one year and hopes to continue helping the Society fulfill its objectives successfully with the help of his able committee. |
