The Senior School (Year 7 to Year 13)

The Senior School has a distinctive character: academic, but also thoughtful and sensitive; competitive but good-humoured; capable of inspiring passion and skill in the arts; developing committed, independent students who are knowledgeable and appreciative of the contribution they can make in a multi-cultural world.

Success is measured not only in terms of academic achievement but also in maturity, a respect for the individual and the development of social awareness, self discipline and motivation. We encourage students to help and support others within the School and to give service to the wider community.

Teaching lessons are normally 45 minutes long, or 1½ hours for some practical subjects and PE. A daily homework programme is monitored by the form tutor. In certain subjects, teaching groups are organised on the basis of ability. The academic life of the School is complemented by an active pastoral and guidance team, which works hard to ensure that the personal, social, emotional and health education of the pupils is supported and developed.

A variety of creative and sporting pursuits in the After School Activities programme enables students to explore their potential outside curriculum study and is aimed at developing the balanced and integrated individual. Students also have the opportunity to push their personal boundaries through the challenge of the International Award.

The facilities of the Senior School are impressive. Three specialist Science laboratories, supporting work to A-level; a light and spacious Art studio; two workshops for Design & Technology equipped for work in resistant materials and Graphic Design; two computer rooms with high-specification PCs, LCD teaching projectors and internet access. The computing facilities allow all pupils and teachers access to Information Technology, including word processing, desktop publishing, graphics, spreadsheets and database facilities. The excellent Music facilities include a self-contained music room with a number of practice rooms. There are separate seminar rooms for Sixth Form teaching.

The Senior Library is comfortable and well resourced, with dedicated PCs and workstations, providing students with an oasis of calm in which to study. The qualified Librarian guides the students in good library practice. The Library is open before and after school to allow pupils to make the most of its facilities.

Our Learning Support Department guides those who may need help in reaching their potential. Students requiring learning support are carefully assessed and an individual Education Plan is agreed with their parents, who are kept fully informed of progress through regular meetings and reports.
